Missing teeth can do more than leave holes in your smile or cause cracks in your confidence. Your teeth help uphold the muscular and skeletal structure of your face. Without a complete smile, you could suffer from bone loss, bite issues and facial changes, not to mention difficulties speaking and eating.

Southgate Dental Centre can replace missing teeth with dental implants; completing your smile and maintaining your oral health. Request an appointment to find out if dental implants are an option for you.

All services are performed by general dentists.

Single Tooth Implants

Southgate Dental Centre performs single tooth implants directly into the jaw bone (endosteal implants), giving them similar stability to a natural tooth.

Parts of a Single Tooth Implant

A single tooth implant is actually comprised of three parts: the implant, the abutment, and the restoration.

  • The implant is a small cylinder similar to a screw. It functions as like an artificial root, keeping the implanted tooth firmly in place so it looks, feels, and works like a natural tooth.
  • The abutment is a metal post that attaches to the implant and protrudes from the gums. This piece is designed to support the crown and secure it to the implant.
  • The restoration or the crown is a cover that attaches to the abutment to create the look of a natural tooth. Crowns are custom-made to fit your mouth and match the rest of your natural teeth. In most cases, these pieces are made from ceramic.

The Installation Process

Exam & Consultation

Patients hoping to receive single-tooth implants must first undergo an exam and consultation. Endosteal implants require a certain amount of healthy jaw tissue, so your dental team will perform X-rays to determine whether single tooth implants are the right choice for you.

We need 3-dimensional scans of your teeth, which is why we require cone beam x-rays. This special type of x-ray helps us determine the quantity and quality of your jaw bone, whether an implant will fit, and how the implant will need to be angled. We may need to refer you out to have your cone beam x-rays completed.

Once we’ve confirmed your candidacy, we can schedule an appointment for your surgery. The implantation process varies from patient to patient. In most cases, implantation is a three-step procedure done over the span of 3 to 6 months.

Your general dentist may be able to tell you how many procedures you will need at the time of your consultation.

  • Step 1: Install the implant. After the implant is surgically installed, you will need to wait 3 to 6 months for everything to heal properly.
  • Step 2: Create an implant impression. Once the implant is healed and settled, we need to take an impression of it and the surrounding area. This allows us to custom-create a crown that fits comfortably alongside your natural teeth.
  • Step 3: Place the crown and abutment. Your crown will be ready approximately two weeks after we take the impression. At this point, we will secure the crown and abutment over the implant, restoring the look and function of a natural tooth.

Caring for Your Dental Implants

Though dental implants are made to last, they still require just as much care and attention as natural teeth. Be sure to follow these tips when caring for your dental implants.

  • Quit smoking
  • Brush for two minutes at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush or a powered toothbrush
  • Use non-abrasive toothpaste
  • Rinse with anti-microbial mouthwash
  • Stimulate your gums with plastic-wired proxabrushes, soft picks, or rubber stimulators
  • Floss daily with non-shredding floss or a water flosser
  • Have your implants professionally cleaned 3-4 times a year
  • Sleep with a mouthguard/splint
